VasesShown below is a very small selection of the many styles of vases Yvonne produces. Some of the vases are produced in exotic timbers such as Zebrano, Imbuya, etc. but the vast majority are timbers such as Rhododendron, Sycamore, Beech, Ash etc. from locally grown trees which have fallen in storms. This vase has an open triple barley twist running up through the centre of it and emerging out of the top that was turned and carved from a piece of Purpleheart. Its purple, red colour and shape suggest flames but still combine harmoniously with the shape of the vase. The surrounding white wood of the open barley twist vase was created from Sycamore and the binds were carved with a double curvature. The black base and top were turned from Ebony and contrast brilliantly with the white wood of the vase. The woods used are Sycamore, Purpleheart and Ebony. The overall height is approximately 290mm (11.5") Lacework Sea Life Vase
This vase was turned from a piece of Sycamore that had some coloration in it and a natural knot running through part of it. I turned the wall thickness down to about 2mm (1/14”) before then carving a series of holes to form the 2 sea life designs, a turtle and seahorses. I also used pyrography to enhance the very finely detailed parts of these two designs. Round the bottom of the vase underneath the designs I pyrographed a series of swirls and then carved holes within these lines to form a lacework effect pattern inside the swirls. The overall effect was to give the impression of wild, rolling waves. The final ornamentation I added to the vase was a Celtic style design, which I carved around the top of it with the idea of creating a piece that echoed the shape and form of the beautiful pottery of Egyptian and Roman times. The woods used are Sycamore and Rosewood. The overall height of the vase is approximately 230mm (9”). Lacework Fish Vase
The seas round Cornwall’s coast, filled with a diverse array of beautiful sea life, inspired the design for this piece. I carved designs, connected to the oceans, round the vase, in particular and most prominently shown the picture of two fish and at the back lacework designs of seaweed. I also carved a jagged pattern round the rim and then burnt the edges with the pyrography kit to give a symbolic representation of coral as a backdrop for the fish and seaweed. The woods used are Lime and Bubinga. Sycamore Open Barley Twist Vase With Bubinga Finial
I have expanded on the design of the open barley twist vases by adding a Bubinga top and base that have holes carved through them to create a lacework effect. Yew Vase With Open Barley Twist Binds
The gardens of Pencarrow provided the source of timber and a piece of ceramic in the house the inspiration for this Yew vase. The hard lines of the form was softened by carving double curvature open binds through to create a more delicate form. Height 155mm (6.1") All dimensions are approximate. |
