More Sculptural forms

This sculptural form consists of a dragon carved out of Lime about to take flight out of a carved Sycamore form below. The idea behind this piece was that the carved form below, with the swirls in amongst the lacework pattern, represented the mists of the mind with the fantasies emerging from it in the form of the dragon.

I used pyrography to enhance the swirls on the carved round form and then carved each of the individual holes around them in turn to form the lacework effect pattern.

The dragon is standing on a tree trunk, which I also carved, with its tail wrapped around it. You can see this clearer in the picture below.

The very base of the sculptural form is turned from a piece of Imbuya, which naturally has a darker colour and therefore gives a nice contrast to the rest of the lighter coloured woods used in the sculpture.

The woods used are Lime, Sycamore, Imbuya, Rosewood and Ebony.

The overall height of the sculpture is approximately 350mm (14”).

This is another picture of part of the sculptural form I created called Release. The carved dragon on the tree trunk is actually glued onto a base of Rosewood, which fits onto a corresponding base fixed within the carved Sycamore form below it. This means that the Dragon can be removed to gain a better view of the lower half of the woodcarving.
